Prostate Cancer Survivorship Matters

In 2017 more than 200,000 Australian men will be living with prostate cancer, 80% of them long-term survivors. 1 in 5 Australian men can expect to be diagnosed with prostate cancer by age 85. By 2020 more than 30,000 Australian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. Men living in rural areas of Australia have a 32% higher risk of death from prostate cancer than men from urban areas.

Prostate cancer survivorship is a major challenge for individuals, communities, health services, and for Australian society as a whole. Survivorship encompasses the health and well-being of the man with prostate cancer from diagnosis and treatment throughout the whole of his life – including cancer-related physical, psychosocial and economic issues. This includes the experiences of families, partners and caregivers.

About the Centre

In a coordinated and collaborative effort to advance prostate cancer survivorship research, Griffith University and Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia established an Australian-first joint initiative in January 2013, the Prostate Cancer Survivorship Research Centre. In 2016 the Centre became an NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence.

The purpose of the Centre is to undertake strategic research to better understand and meet the survivorship needs of men with prostate cancer, their partners and families. The Centre uses evidence-based outcomes to improve policy and practice for men with prostate cancer. We focus on four key themes:

  • Effective delivery of psychosocial and sexual care in prostate cancer
  • Integration of tailored exercise medicine into supportive care to improve quality of life and extend survival
  • Optimisation of clinical pathways for diagnosis and treatment
  • Equity in outcomes across geographic and socio-demographic boundaries

Importantly, the Centre is a consumer-driven initiative, guided by the advice and opinion of people affected by prostate cancer.
